Moose Pass and Talkeetna

While we were kayaking around Humpy Cove, Susan was kind enough to make some calls and when they picked us up in the water taxi they provided us with a list of places to stay before we hit the road to Talkeetna and then Fairbanks. At the bottom of the list was Teddys in the Wood, a bed and breakfast in Moose Pass just outside of Seward. I had noticed the sign on our way down to Seward and Susan had marked it with a star so we decided to give it a try and boy were we happy we did! We arrived late and after Teddy showed us to our apartment in the restored barn we took steaming hot showers and then lounged around in the beautiful main room, pulling books off the book shelves and reading to each other. Before long we retired for the night and slept the sleep of kayakers - sore and tired but soothed by the time spent on the water.

Bright and fairly early the next morning Teddy and her dog Buddy came over with the most delicious home-made breakfast - scones and strawberry preserves, a delicious and gorgeous fruit plate, yummy coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. We spent some time chatting with Teddy and she recommended a hiking spot at Byers Lake in Denali State Park. She even gave us some sock-eye salmon jerky for our hike! We ate our delicious breakfast, spent some time exploring the garden and old buildings and then waved goodbye to Teddy and Buddy as we headed off on the rest of our journey.

It wasnt long before we saw our first critter of the day other than Buddy - a majestic bald eagle sitting at the top of a tree. Shortly after that sighting as we were driving up the Kenai Peninsula we saw Beluga whales in the bay. We pulled over and watched about 20 whales swim through the bay. I will never forget the sound of them breaching and the beauty of their white backs coming out of the water. Amazing!

After taking in the beauty of the whales we got back on the road to the small town of Talkeetna, a little less than halfway to Fairbanks. In Talkeetna we stayed in a newly built log cabin after having a bbq dinner and taking a walking tour of the town (one road the river and the cemetery. I dont recommend taking in the local cemetery near the teeny tiny airport right after booking a small plane tour of Denali for the next morning but it did make falling asleep that night very difficult and ultimately very funny. Fortunately, when we woke up the next morning it was misty and foggy and our flight was cancelled. I say fortunately because it gave us time to have a delicious breakfast in Talkeetna before our hike that Teddy recommended!
