yurtle the turtle

Monday was my birthday and I got to wake up in a yurt! I don't recall when I first learned about yurts but from the minute I saw a photo I was fascinated by the circle structures. Last year when we were driving home from our 40th birthday road trip we drove through Big Sur and spotted yurts up on the cliffs high above the ocean. When Bryan asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday I immediately thought of the yurts at Treebones. At first everything was booked but I kept checking back and just days before we were heading out on our mini road trip, yurt no. 15 freed up. So Sunday we drove to Big Sur and by about 4:00 we were bouncing between the chairs out on the deck overlooking the the ocean and the comfortable bed underneath the crown of the yurt with the view of the top of the trees. We had a delcious dinner in the lodge that evening and then went for a very quiet and relaxing swim and hot tub under the almost full moon. The next morning, after a gloriously comfortable sleep, we went back to the lodge for the self-serve waffle buffet and then right back to the yurt for some snuggling in front of the fire. It was heavenly!

After we checked out of Treebones we drove south down Highway 1 toward Cambria. We hiked up to a waterfall and stopped to watch the elephant seals, taking lots of pictures at both spots. Then we had lunch in Cambria and stopped at a bed and breakfast in San Luis Obispo. We decided that we both really wanted to stay near the ocean so we drove to Pismo Beach and found a room at a nice hotel right on the beach. After checking in and sitting out on the deck watching the surfers, we walked along Pismo beach and watched the sunset. We had dinner at a cozy restaurant and walked back to the hotel on the moonlit beach. Tuesday morning we strolled through a couple of garden/sculpture spots while we drank our coffee and then we headed to Paso Robles to do some wine tasting. We stopped at Turley and J. Lohr and then had lunch at the yummiest, spiciest little Mexican place before we headed back home.

I had a very happy birthday! This weekend we've been gardening and relaxing. And we just got tickets to see Manu Chao in July! Soon we are going for brunch and maybe we'll do some kayaking. Life is good
