annegeluna's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- hiking in my garden Yesterday evening I met Bryan and Madgi outside and wandered around the garden in my new hiking boots hoping to break them in a bit before our Alaska trip. I checked out the pumkins, eggplant, tomatoes, corn, sunflowers and the flower garden - everything looked nice and healthy and the veggies looked delicious. Tuesday evening we spent alot of time taking care of the tomato plants, which are producing like crazy, and last night I could tell they were happy to have some extra breathing room if you will. We've also been watching the corn closely as it's our experiment this year. We noticed aphids a few weeks ago and released some ladybugs. We still have aphids but we also have lots of ladybugs - two were busy gettin' it on last night on a stalk of corn. We noticed one stalk had two ears of corn so we took off the smaller one to inspect it up close and while there were aphids under the first layer of husk, they hadn't touched the very small ear of court hidden deep within the protective layers. Hopefully that will remain the case as the other 25 ears mature. That little ear of corn was the size of the tiny pickled ears you find in salads and on antipasto platters and it had to be the cutest thing I've ever picked from my garden. We also picked three other delicious things last night - one head of red leaf lettuce, a black crim tomato and a green zebra tomato. Yummy! We are having so much fun with our garden. Of course it cuts into creative time, housecleaning time, computer time, correspondence time and lots of other time but it's pretty freaking awesome and something we love so it's all good! So, in about 5 hours we'll be at the airport heading to Pasadena for Bret's graduation. We're hoping to catch the Plimsouls in Hollywood on Saturday night and I'm looking forward to staying at a hotel for the weekend. Breakfast in bed rocks!
